ACCE members Alma Rodriguez and Roberto Cortes just received a notice that on August 1st their rent will increase from $850 to $1250 (47% increase). Roberto earns $18 an hour doing construction. Alma is a homemaker. They’ve lived in Richmond for the past 14 years. They live at South 15th and Maine. They are not sure what they are going to do but say they can’t afford the increase. Alma and Roberto’s situation shows why it is so important for Richmond to pass common sense Tenant Protections like Rent Control and Just Cause for Evictions.

Last May Ana and her husband were paying $635 per month in rent. In August of last year her rent went up to $1150 per month. Recently they received another notice of rent increase that on August 1st their rent will go up to $1595. Ana and her husband live with their 14 year old son in central Richmond. Ana’s husband is a construction worker making $17 per hour in San Francisco. They are currently looking for another apartment in Richmond. On Tuesday Ana testified at a Richmond City Council meeting about her situation and the need for stronger tenant protections.
