California Strengthens State Eviction Protections

After months of lobbying, organizing and actions to pass the Homelessness Prevention Act, Senate Bill 567 (Durazo), Governor Newsom signed the bill into law. The bill strengthens enforcements of The Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (AB 1482) and closes loopholes on false owner move ins and renovictions. It is the most recent expansion of tenant protections for the 17 million Californians that rent!

Antioch Wins a Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance (TAHO)!

After months of organizing and actions demanding stronger protections for Antioch tenants, the Antioch City Council passed a Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance (TAHO)! The vote follows Antioch passing rent control last year, and comes out of a multi-year effort to win a progressive majority on the Antioch council and the growing tenants rights movement in Contra Costa! 

Los Angeles County Tenants Win Right to Counsel

On July 11, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors unanimously voted to codify the right to free legal representation for low-income tenants facing eviction in unincorporated areas of the county. The motion directs the county counsel to draft an ordinance establishing the right to counsel for eligible tenants by FY 2024-2025. ACCE leaders, as part of the Renter's Right to Counsel coalition, spent weeks attending board meetings and giving public comments to ensure this important right is guaranteed for LA County tenants! LA County joins New York City and San Francisco in establishing a renter's right to counsel.
