In a major win for tenant rights, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously on October 30th to dramatically strengthen the city's Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance with powerful new protections, including mandatory fines, triple damages for willful harassment, and required attorney fee payments for successful tenant cases. This hard-fought victory, won through relentless organizing by ACCE Los Angeles and the Keep LA Housed coalition, will usher in 2025 with robust new tools to fight landlord abuse - transforming the original 2021 ordinance from a paper tiger into a law with real teeth to defend tenants' rights!
Culminating a 3-year tenant protections campaign in Antioch, on September, 2024, the Antioch City Council passed a landmark Just-Cause Eviction Ordinance that prevents landlords from evicting tenants without valid reasons, particularly targeting profit-driven evictions like "renovictions" and false owner move-ins. This victory, achieved through organizing by ACCE Antioch and allied partners, complements the tenant protections won in 2022 and 2023, the Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance and Rent Stabilization Ordinance, to create a comprehensive safety net for vulnerable residents!
After months of lobbying, organizing and actions to pass the Homelessness Prevention Act, Senate Bill 567 (Durazo), Governor Newsom signed the bill into law. The bill strengthens enforcements of The Tenant Protection Act of 2019 (AB 1482) and closes loopholes on false owner move ins and renovictions. It is the most recent expansion of tenant protections for the 17 million Californians that rent!
ACCE strives to be a self-sufficient organization, independent from funding from the government or corporations in order to allow us to be accountable to our members and take action when needed in our communities. To keep the work going, we depend on our members and donors who contribute regularly to support our work. Will you make a contribution to support ACCE Action's continued organizing?
