NO Evictions During COVID!

GOVERNOR NEWSOM, SENATE PRO-TEM ATKINS, ASSEMBLY SPEAKER RENDON - Pass a full eviction moratorium during COVID!

The Coronavirus crisis is far from over, and in fact many counties are now seeing an uptick.

And we know, lower income people, African Americans and Latinos/as are disproportionately impacted -which includes serious illness and in some cases death.

It is almost unimaginable that you, our state leaders, are allowing people – including seniors and families with young children – to be evicted from their homes during this crisis.

We are calling on you to act immediately to prevent unnecessary evictions by taking the following steps:

  • Enact a moratorium – via executive order or an emergency special session of the legislature – on all evictions;
  • Remove the ban in Assembly Bill 3088 on cities and counties enacting their own COVID-19 eviction protections; and
  • Forgive unpaid rent due to COVID, from March 2020 until the pandemic subsides, and provide low- to moderate income impacted landlords with financial assistance.

While Assembly Bill 3088 prevents most evictions due to inability to pay, and a “Just Cause” is currently required for evictions, unscrupulous and/or desperate landlords find, or make up, causes to evict. Additionally, many tenants either do not know their rights or are too intimidated to defend their rights, leading to more people losing their housing during a pandemic!

This should not be allowed to happen on our watch!  On your watch!!

Please act now to keep families in their homes, during the worst health crisis this country has faced in a century.
