First Tenant Anti-Harassment Lawsuit Filed in Los Angeles

Thanks to years of ACCE leader organizing and massive pressure on Los Angeles' City Attorney, the City Attorney's office announced on July 15 the first lawsuit filed under the city's Tenant Anti-Harassment Ordinance (TAHO). The lawsuit was filed on behalf of tenants living at an apartment complex on Woodlawn Avenue and 43rd Street in south LA. The tenants have been dealing with illegal harassment from their landlord in an effort to get them to vacate their homes to charge higher rents. According to the complaint, the harassment included imposing new charges and fees, interruption of services, and discarding the tenants' personal belongings. On July 21, the tenants, ACCE leaders, coalition partners from Keep LA Housed, and elected officials held a press conference to celebrate the lawsuit filing. ACCE leaders will continue to keep up the pressure to ensure more TAHO lawsuits are filed in the future.
