After a two-year lobbying effort by ACCE leaders, partner organizations, and community members, a new traffic light has been installed next to Carver Middle School in South Los Angeles. The campaign to install the light was launched after 12-year-old Carver student Derick Serrano was tragically killed by a motorist in April 2024 as he was trying to cross the busy intersection next to the school.
At the time, there were no crosswalk, crossing guard, signal light or signage at the intersection. ACCE's Education Chapter worked tirelessly with partner organizations, parents and staff at Carver to pressure City officials for a traffic light- rather than an inadequate pedestrian signal, which the City originally proposed. ACCE is next working to expand better street safety improvements to schools citywide.
